  • College Essays

Posted by Kelly McCombs at 10/10/2011 12:00:00 PM

College Essays and Personal Statements are always one of the biggest challenges for seniors as they prepare college applications. The process becomes seemingly more complicated every year, as particular colleges and universities also require additional writing supplements.  The good news is this part of the application does not have to be stressful. In fact, this process can prove to be enjoyable and often cathartic as students simply celebrate their stories through individuality. So, what is the magic potion for writing a perfect college essay or personal statement?  Being Yourself!  Colleges have no shortage of smart and bright students. What they are seeking are individuals exhibiting talents, strengths, weaknesses, successes, and failures. This process often reveals some of life’s greatest disappointments and defining moments.   If you ask any college or university representative, they will easily tell you that technical ability comes secondary to providing a view into the life of a student.  This can be presented in many formats, and those formats are that which frame individuality.   Below are a few tips that will aid a student as they navigate through this process at home.

    1.      Develop a hook statement.  An admissions officer will gain or lose interest in a college essay within the first paragraph.  Make them want to keep reading!

    2.      Be careful with storytelling. The process of telling a story gets detailed and often calls for more content than is desired. Tell the story in a clear and concise manner. If one has to read a section over for clarity, it should be omitted or re-worded.

    3.      Follow the 1/3, 2/3 rule. 1/3 should be about the particular topic. 2/3 should be about you, highlighting the “before and after” growth and progression process.

    4.      Start strong, finish stronger.  Assure them of who you are now and will become as a result of topic of discussion.

    5.      Be aware of your word count and avoid including too much detail. Wordiness often becomes rambling. Rambling turns off the reader.  Discuss the topic, make your points clearly, and show your growth.

    6.      Have someone your trust to evaluate your writing! If they say your writing reflects you perfectly, you have done a great job!  Trust their feedback!  Also, solicit the advice of your local Road to College or Inspire Counselor for feedback.  Many college counseling professionals often have background in this field and can offer valuable feedback!

Below you will find college websites that contain essay samples from the previous class of admitted students. Please take a look at these essays, as they helped admit a student to nationally ranked college programs!
